tazkiyah

Bismillaah,

Shaykh Ahmad al-Qar`aawee narrates:

Often, before the Shaykh [Saalih al-`Uthaymeen] entered the masjid, a little girl of 6 years would approach him asking the Shaykh for a riyal. So, the Shaykh, smiling, would say to her:

Would you like a (brand) new riyal or an old (used) riyal?

She would reply: “I would like a new riyal.”

So the Shaykh would gave her a new riyal, and then she would ask him on behalf of her sister, and the Shaykh would give her one (riyal) too.’

“O soul, woe to You!
Guidance has come to you,
Answer it! Here is the caller of Allah,
summoning you.
Many-a-time are you called to guidance
yet turn away do you,
But answer do you the caller to misguidance
when he calls you!

Trustworthiness is a portion of the deen (piety), and precision is included in proficiency; so what a haafidh really needs, is to be:

Fearful (of Allaah), intelligent, grammatical, a linguist, righteous, modest, Salafee, and it is sufficient enough for him to write two hundred volumes, and to gather five hundred reliable compilations (books), and not to become fatigued seeking knowledge until death, with sincerity and humility, otherwise let him not trouble himself.

Etiquette of Seeking Knowledge, Bakr Aboo Zayd

Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, says:

In short, there is nothing more beneficial for the heart than reading the Qur`aan and with contemplation and reflection. The Qur`aan encompasses all the levels of the travellers, the conditions of the workers, and stations of those possessing knowledge. It is the Qur`aan that generates love, desire, fear, hope, repentance, reliance, pleasure, entrustment, gratitude, patience, and the rest of the different states that are life to the heart and perfection of it. Likewise, it repels all the rebuked characteristics and actions that cause the corruption and ruin of the heart.

If people were to possess a realization of what recitation of the Qur`aan with contemplation contains, they would devote themselves to it at the expense of anything else. When the person reads it with reflection and he comes across an aayah that he is in need of, for the cure of his heart, he repeats it, even if he does so a hundred times or the whole night. Hence, to recite a single aayah of the Qur`aan with contemplation and reflection is better than reciting the Qur`aan to completion without any contemplation or reflection. It is also more beneficial for the heart and more conducive to attaining eemaan and tasting the sweetness of the Qur`aan.

Ibn al-Qayyim:

The soul will never become pious and purified except through undergoing afflictions. It is the same as gold that can never be pure except after removing all the base metals in it.

al-Fawaa`id, p365

Al-Imaam, Al-Haafidh Al-Mubarakfuri:

We need to constantly follow and stick to the Sunnah; especially this Sunnah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We need it now more than ever, in this time where Fitnah is knocking on everybody’s door. Just look around and reflect. How many people were praised from Ahlus Sunnah, and are now dispraised by Ahlus Sunnah?! How many scholars were recommended to be learnt from, but now are being warned against?! How many people were Muslims have now left Islam?!. Reflect, Reflect O Ahlus-Sunnah,

O’ Changer of the hearts make my heart stick to Your religion.

Aameen.

Narrated Aa`ishaah (radiallaahu ‘anhaa):

[...]

I was a young girl and did not have much knowledge of the Qur`aan. I said. ‘I know, by Allaah, that you have listened to what people are saying and that has been planted in your minds and you have taken it as a truth.

Now, if I told you that I am innocent and Allaah knows that I am innocent, you would not believe me and if I confessed to you falsely that I am guilty, and Allaah knows that I am innocent you would believe me.

By Allaah, I don’t compare my situation with you except to the situation of Joseph’s father (i.e. Jacob) who said,

‘So (for me) patience is most fitting against that which you assert

and it is Allaah (Alone) whose help can be sought.’

~

Then I turned to the other side of my bed hoping that Allaah would prove my innocence. By Allaah I never thought that Allaah would reveal Divine Inspiration in my case, as I considered myself too inferior to be talked of in the Holy Qur`aan. I had hoped that Allaah’s Apostle might have a dream in which Allaah would prove my innocence. By Allaah, Allaah’s Apostle had not got up and nobody had left the house before the Divine Inspiration came to Allaah’s Apostle. So, there overtook him the same state which used to overtake him, (when he used to have, on being inspired divinely). He was sweating so much so that the drops of the sweat were dropping like pearls though it was a (cold) wintry day. When that state of Allaah’s Apostle was over, he was smiling and the first word he said, ‘Aa`ishah! Thank Allaah, for Allaah has declared your innocence.’ My mother told me to go to Allaah’s Apostle . I replied, ‘By Allaah I will not go to him and will not thank but Allaah.’

Ibn Al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:

Trusting in Allaah in word only is totally different from trusting in Him with the heart. It is the same as repentance with the tongue while having the intention to commit sins again, and the repentance of the sincere heart even if the tongue has not said anything. For the statement of the servant: “I have put my trust in Allaah” with the intention of something else in his heart is like the statement “I have repented to Allaah” with the intention of committing sins.

Al-Fawaa`id, p150

Alee (radiallaahu ‘anhu):

“The lands will shake, the caller will call out, the beasts will be resurrected, secrets will be revealed, hearts will quake, the Hell-fire whose fire will be blazing, will come into sight. O slaves of Allaah, FEAR Allaah! With the fear of a person who is truly afraid, who is truly cautious, who truly sees (impending doom), and who is truly deterred (from sinning).”

Hilyat ul-Awliyaa’ 1/77-78 and Sifat us-Safwah 1/171-172

What a wonderful thing it is to know Him (i.e. Allaah)! But how can one know Him and not love Him? How can one hear the caller, but fail to respond? How can one know the profit that shall be gained in dealing with Him, but still prefer others? How can one taste the bitterness of disobeying Him, but still abstain from seeking the pleasure of obeying Him? How can one feel the severity of engaging in trivial speech, but fail to open your Heart with His remembrance? How can one be tortured by being attached to others, but not rush toward the bliss of turning to Him in repentance?

Perhaps it is most surprising to know that while you are in need of Him, you are still reluctant to move toward Him because you seek others.
